Is Your Toaster Attacking Your PC

Malware embedded in microchips on small appliances and electronics may be lying in wait to infect your computer. Items like microwaves, toasters, irons, cell phones, dash board cameras and other such devices manufactured in China may be infected.

Chips in small appliances shipped from China to Russia have been proven to be infected with malware. The chip is able to connect to any unsecure wireless signal inside of 200 meters. Once attached to the signal the chip locates computers connected to the network and attempts to infect them.

Currently the malware only creates zombie computers to populate some criminal’s network. Since no commands to the zombie army have been transmitted, the command and control server is as yet not located. However, it appears the infection allows complete backdoor access to perform almost any type of activity.

The major concern for authorities is that no shipments to other countries, even the US, have been tested, and no one knows for how long this has been going on.

Remember to use a personal firewall, keep real time antivirus scanning enabled on your computer, don’t accept peer to peer wireless connection, secure your Bluetooth, and if you have to connect to a public wireless network (like a coffee shop or hotel) ask if they have disabled peer to peer connection on the wireless.
