isoHunt Is Shutting Down

isoHunt settles for $110 million and a permanent shutdown. Gary Fung of Canada founded isoHunt, one of the oldest and most popular BitTorrent sites more than a decade ago. For several years now they have been embroiled in a suit against the movie studios for copyright infringements.

Just weeks before the start of a jury trial in a Los Angeles federal court Gary Fung settled. Attorneys for the studios estimate isoHunt has between $2 million and $5 million so no one is sure how much they will actually pay on the settlement, but what is clear is that the studios were really after a shutdown.

With isoHunt shutting down its operations worldwide it looks like the MPAA won. Much in the same way the record companies won against Napster. However, electronic distribution of music became main stream once it was commercialized. Someday, so will digitial movie releases over the internet become the norm. We have already seen movies released directly to Pay Per View.
